What is fundraising consultancy?
The Association of Fundraising Consultants describes it as external assistance in strategic planning to achieve organisational goals. This can include implementing the strategy, adjusting it, monitoring progress and supporting the organisation until those goals are achieved.
There are many reasons why a charity might wish to use the services of a fundraising consultant. These are some:
example a)
A charity raises money on an ad hoc basis and wants to write a fundraising strategy so that it can plan its income generation over a fixed time period, often 3 years. It does not have the resources (either time or expertise) to write the strategy internally, so secures a fundraising consultant to work with them to produce it.
example b)
A charity operates an effective strategy for its revenue fundraising but wants to mount a capital appeal for a special project. It needs help to plan and raise this money without detracting from the income it already gets. A fundraising consultant works with the charity to accomplish the appeal by testing its feasibility, preparing the case for support and researching income sources.
example c)
A charity needs assistance with its fundraising applications but does not have the staff capacity to fulfil its needs. It uses a fundraising consultant to undertake this work, benefiting from hands-on experience without having to pay the associated costs of employing a contracted member of staff.
